2000-2001 Season In Review

Dual Record: 6-6
Pac-10 Finish: 6th
NCAA Finish: 21st

Finished with a 6-6 dual meet record, 1-5 vs. Pac-10 opponents ... placed 21st at the NCAA Championships in Long Island, N.Y., matching its finish from 2000 ... placed sixth at the Pac-10 Championships in Federal Way, Wash., its fifth such finish in as many years ... throughout the season, ASU swimming established three school records, all via the medley relays ... at the NCAA Championships, ASU's 400 medley relay team of Miranda Shald, Riley Mants, Sarah Baham and Claire Hedenskog placed eighth at an ASU record pace of 3:40.16 ... in the prelims of that record-setting final, Shald moved to No. 1 on ASU's 100 backstroke list, leading off the 400 medley relay in a record mark of 55.22 (ASU allows opening splits to qualify for corresponding individual records) ... ASU's 200 medley relay record (1:42.16) came virtue of a fifth-place finish at the Pac-10 Championships ... the Sun Devils' best individual finishes of the year at the NCAA Championships were a pair of 10th-place showings by Sarah Baham in the 100 and 200 butterfly ... Baham, already the school record holder in both events, swam 54.18 in the 100 fly and and 1:59.89 in the 200 fly ... while her effort in the 100 did not improve her record of 53.68, no other Sun Devil has ever clocked as fast a time ... in all, four ASU swimmers gathered 11 All-America honors, including four first-team awards ... at the Pac-10 Championships, ASU's best individual finish was a third-place showing by Mants in the 200 breaststroke (2:13.41) ... although not in the post-season, the women of Sun Devil diving established three school records throughout the season ... junior Natalie Burgess set the standard in the 1-meter six-dive optionals format (284.07) -- a new competitive format in 2000-01 - vs. Arizona while also snapping Janae Lautenschlager's 1990 record in the 3-meter six-dive format (341.40) ... at the Georgia Invitational, senior Trish Malatesta bettered her own record from the platform (438.65) ... ASU gathered multiple academic honors at the close of the season, including team recognition from the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) for outstanding achievement in the classroom ... named to the Pac-10 All-Academic first-team was Maltesta, Elizabeth Lightner, Amanda Stanford and Josie Jedick ... Kelli Sasada picked up second-team honors while Natalie Burgess and Riley Mants earned Pac-10 All-Academic honorable mention status.
