TEMPE, Ariz. - Mike Leake threw a gem on the mound as the No. 4 Arizona State University baseball team defeated No. 15 Missouri 2-1 on Thursday in front of a crowd of 2,603 at Winkles Field-Packard Stadium at Brock Ballpark. The Sun Devils are now 6-0 after the win on the first day of the DeMarini Invitational.
Leake had a no-hitter through seven innings and ended up going eight shutout innings, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out 10 to improve to 2-0 on the season. He was on the winning end of a terrific pitcher's duel, as Missouri pitcher Kyle Gibson took the loss despite allowing just five hits and two earned runs with eight strikeouts over seven innings.
Leake has allowed just three hits and one run with 17 strikeouts in his first two starts of the season.
Matt Newman was the only player in the game with multiple hits, as he had two singles and scored the game's first run to lead the Sun Devil offense.
ASU got all of its offense in the first two innings. Newman singled to lead off the bottom of the first, stole second base and then scored on a sharp single up the middle by Zack MacPhee.
In the second, Mike Murphy ripped a double into the right field corner to score Abe Ruiz and put the Sun Devils in front 2-0. Leake then kept the Tigers at bay through the eighth, when he allowed a leadoff double by Andrew Thigpen to break up his no-hit bid. However, he struck out the side after that to keep Thigpen stranded on second.
The Sun Devils continue play in the DeMarini Invitational tomorrow, as they face Northern Illinois at 6:30 p.m. at Winkles Field-Packard Stadium at Brock Ballpark. Missouri will play Oregon State at 1 p.m.
In earlier action in the DeMarini Invitational on Thursday, Oregon State defeated Northern Illinois 23-7.
