TEMPE, Ariz. - Sophomore Casey Myers went 4-for-5 at the plate as No. 9 Arizona State notched an 11-9 victory over the Arizona Wildcats on Saturday afternoon in a nonconference game.
The Sun Devils improve to 18-5, while the 'Cats fall to 15-5.
Arizona got on the board first after Rafell Jones' double scored leftfielder Kenny Huff. The Devils would respond with three runs in the fourth off of a homerun by Myers, his first on the season. The game seesawed back and forth until ASU reliever Chad Pennington closed the door on the Wildcats in the bottom of the ninth to seal the win.
Third baseman Andrew Beinbrink ended the afternoon with a 3-for-5 effort with three runs scored and two RBI. Rightfielder Jeff Duncan went 2-for-5 with a run and an RBI.
Arizona centerfielder Rafell Jones went 4-for-5 with two runs scored and three RBI to lead the Wildcats. Third baseman Erik Torres had a three-for-four effort at the plate.
Freshman starter Jon Switzer picked up his fourth win of the season going 5.0 innings with 7 hits, two runs, two runs earned, four strikeouts and two walks. Sophomore Chad Pennington picked up his first save of the season going 4.0 innings, allowing eight hits, seven runs, five earned runs, four strikeouts with two walks.
Starter Mike Crawford (2-2) picked up the loss for the Wildcats lasting 5.0 innings while allowing eight hits, six runs, five earned runs with six strikeouts.
Arizona State and Arizona will play the final game of this non-conference series on Sunday, February 28 at 1 p.m. at Sancet Field.
