TEMPE, Ariz. -- The seventh-ranked Arizona State baseball team (16-7, 5-3) was defeated by eighth-ranked Oklahoma (14-2) 9-5 tonight in the final game of a two-game series in front of a crowd of 2,445 at Packard Stadium.
The Devils struck first, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning and one in the second, but would not score again until the bottom of the eighth when junior Andrew Beinbrink hit an RBI double followed by a base hit by Jeff Phelps which also drove in a run. Beinbrink led Arizona State with two doubles, finishing the night 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Phelps also made a big contribution for the Devils, going 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Freshman righthander Chad Pennington (1-1) was the starting pitcher for Arizona State and picked up the loss for the Devils going seven-plus innings, while striking out seven and giving up five earned runs. Pennington walked four and recorded six strikeouts.
For the Sooners of Oklahoma, leftfielder Valentino Pascucci went 2-for-3 with three runs scored. First baseman Casey Bookout also contributed with a solo homerun, finishing the night 1-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Righthander Geoff Geary (6-0) remains undefeated after going seven-plus innings for the Sooners, giving up nine hits and three earned runs while striking out six.
The Sun Devils next travel back to Los Angeles to take on third ranked USC in a three-game series beginning March 13 and will then head straight to Fresno, California to face Fresno State in a two-game midweek series.
