TEMPE, Ariz. -- After winning the Pac-10 championship a year ago in 2000, the nationally sixth ranked Arizona State Sun Devil baseball team has been selected by league coaches to finish second in the conference behind No. 2 USC.
The Sun Devils, who were 44-15 overall and 17-7 in the Pac-10 last year, totaled 49 points and one first place vote. The Trojans picked up 52 votes and six first place votes in the preseason poll.
Arizona State returns 14 letterwinners and the entire infield from the program the finished the 2000 season ranked 12th in the nation. 2000 Pac-10 Player of the Year Casey Myers and Team USA member Jon Switzer (LHP) return for the 2001 campaign after both had successful seasons in 2000. Both, along with closer Eric Doble, were named preseason All-Americans.
The 2001 season begins in 16 days against Texas-Arlington on Jan. 26 at Packard Stadium. The annual Alumni game will be held on Saturday, Jan. 20 at 1 p.m. at Packard with special guests to be announced later this week. ASU's annual baseball media day will be held in one week (Jan. 16) at 1 p.m. in the Packard Stadium batting tunnel.
