Former Sun Devil All-American Swimmer Paul Asmuth to be Inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame

Former Arizona State All-American swimmer Paul Asmuth will be inducted in the International Swimming Hall of Fame (ISHOF) this Saturday, May 8th. Asmuth will be honored at the ISHOF Induction Ceremony and Dinner in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., on that day.

Asmuth was a three-time All-American while competing for the Sun Devils. In 1978, Asmuth earned his first All-American honor in the 1,650 freestyle and repeated that feat again the following two years. Asmuth also served as captain of the swimming team during his time at ASU. Despite having graduated in 1980, Asmuth's records remain on the Sun Devils top-10 lists as he is ranked sixth in both the 1,000-yard freestyle and the mile. Asmuth was coached by ASU Hall of Distinction Coach Ron Johnson.

After departing ASU in 1980, Asmuth went the distance and became one of the world's premier marathon swimmers. His accomplishment's include winning the 23-mile Around the Island Swim in Atlantic City eight times, taking first in the 27-mile La Traversee du Lac Memphremagog, Quebec six times, recording three victories in the Capri-Napoli Swim and clocked in the top time in Les Quatorze Mille de Paspebiac Swim four times. Additionally, Asmuth has twice taken first at the Lac St. Jean crossing in Roberval, Quebec at 21 miles and also once at 40 miles. Asmuth still holds records in several of these races.

Asmuth made history when he became the first man to swim Nantucket to Cape Cod, Mass. He has swum the English Channel three times and set the men's swimming record in 1985.

In 2008, Asmuth served as a USA Swimming marathon swimming coach in the first year it was made an event in the Olympic Games.

Asmuth currently resides in St. Helena, Calif., with his wife Marilyn and two children.
