CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Arizona State University cross country team opened its championship season Saturday as the No. 5 women placed tied for third and the No. 25 men finished fifth at the 2007 Pac-10 Cross Country Championships at Trysting Tree Golf Course in Corvallis, Ore.

Overall, No. 1 Stanford (48 points) won the women's team title with No. 2 Oregon (64 points) in second and both ASU and No. 9 Washington tying for third place with 68 points. On the men's side, Oregon won the team title with 39 points and was followed by No. 15 Stanford (55 points), No. 8 California (70 points), No. 19 UCLA (97 points) and ASU (105 points).

The women were paced by Jenna Kingma, who finished the 6,000m course in 20:09.4 to place fifth overall. Her placement ties for the sixth-best conference finish in program history, joining Cassie Bando (2006) and Desiree Davila (2004) as fifth-place finishers. Following Kingma was Ali Kielty in seventh place (20:24.3), Kari Hardt in 12th place (20:43.3), Camille Olson in 18th place (20:44.0) and Angela Spadafino in 26th place (20:57.7) to round out the five scoring places. Also running for the Sun Devils were Kyrstal Duke (31st in 21:07.0), Whitney Lemieux (39th in 21:25.8), Whitney Blue (76th in 22:43.2) and Chelsea Caloia (85th in 23:15.5).

For the men, Kyle Alcorn again paced the Sun Devils as he crossed the line in 23:18.8 to place 10th overall to equal his placement from one year ago, the seventh-highest finish in school history. Alcorn was followed across the line by Jeff Helmer in 15th place (23:57.5), Joey Heller in 25th place (23:43.8), Ben Englehardt in 26th place (23:45.4) and Alonso Contreras in 29th place (23:50.5) to round out the five scoring positions. Also competing in the meet were Garrett Kelly (39th in 24:10.0), Mikias Gelagle (47th in 24:32.9), David Mehlhorn (68th in 24:59.1), Santos Castro (69th in 25:07.4) and Jack Mann (70th in 25:08.4).

One third of the way through the championship season, the Sun Devils will not compete again until November 10 when they return to Oregon to compete in the NCAA West Region Championships in Springfield, hosted by the University of Oregon at the Springfield Country Club.
