The 22nd-ranked Arizona State baseball team opened the 2000 season with a convincing 13-2 win over Utah this afternoon at Packard Stadium. ASU improves to 1-0 on the year, while Utah falls to 0-1.
After a scoreless first inning, the Devils opened up the flood gates with four runs in the second. After Brooks Conrad struck out, designated hitter Brendan Hines hit a towering homerun to rightfield. After Jeff Phelps received a free pass to first, third baseman Mike Lopez singled to left advancing Phelps to second. Freshman Dennis Wyrick then singled to load the bases. Rightfielder Jonah Martin singled to centerfield scoring Phelps and Lopez. Junior Jeff Duncan hit into a fielder's choice scoring Wyrick from third.
The Sun Devils would score in every inning but the first and seventh. Martin went 3-for-4 at the plate with three RBI while junior Mike Lopez had a 2-for-3 night with two runs and two RBI. Freshman Dennis Wyrick went 2-for-4 with two runs and one RBI.
Freshman Mike Esposito, in his first collegiate start, picked up the win on the mound going five innings, allowing four hits, two runs while striking out seven.
Taking the loss for the Utes was starter David Ebright who went four innings gave up six hits and four earned runs. Utah was led by catcher Donald Hawes who went two-for-four with two RBI on the afternoon.
