TEMPE, Ariz. -

The Arizona State University men's and women's swimming and diving teams opened the 2006-07 regular season in impressive fashion at ASU's Mona Plummer Aquatic Complex Friday evening, as the men defeated UNLV 184-116 and the women downed the Rebels 233-65.

 

All-American junior Caitlin Andrew led the way for the women's squad, picking up victories in the 100 back (56.45), 50 free (23.41) and the 100 fly (55.84). 

 

Sophomore Jen Beckberger and junior Sarah Fischer each contributed two individual victories, as Beckberger won the 100 free (51:08) and the 200 free (1:50.47), while Fischer took top billing in the 500 free (4:58.51) and the 1000 free (10:12.20).  

 

ASU showcased promising performances from its freshman swimmers, as newcomer Ashley Evans took top billing in the 100 breast (1:04.50) and the 400 IM (4:27.61), while Ashton Aubry led the way in the 200 fly (2:06.39).

 

Sophomore Rikka Brunner added a victory in the 200 back (2:05.26), and senior Christine Creek recorded the fastest 200 breast time of the day (2:18.74).

 

ASU's women's team members placed first in every event, solidifying the Sun Devils' victory.

 

For the men, junior CJ Nuess paced the squad, finishing atop the competition in three events, the 200 fly (1:52.04), 200 breast (2:03.82) and the 400 IM (3:55.63).

 

Returning All-American junior Lucas Azevedo delivered as expected, leading the way in the 500 free and the 1000 free (9.15.35). 

 

Similar to ASU's women's team, the men's squad was highlighted by the contributions of new Sun Devils.  Freshman Ante Cvitkovic earned two victories, in the 100 (50.98) back and the 200 back (1:50.94), while junior Steve Neuwart recorded the top men's 100 free time of the meet (45.78).

 

Sophomore Sean Boyle impressed in the season opener, recording wins in both the 200 free (1:40.61) and the 100 fly (50.21).

 

Also, ASU's 200 free relay consisting of Neuwart, sophomore Magnus Kjellberg, sophomore Mohammed Madwa and Azevedo topped the Rebels to finish the night's competition.

 

ASU's men's and women's divers added to the night's impressive performances, as sophomore Erin Hobbs topped the field in the 1m (266.47) and 3m (289.95) diving events, while redshirt freshman Micky Benedetti did the same for the men, with scores of 364.27 in the 1m and 404.77 in the 3m. 

 

Sophomore Billy Sweeney and senior Cassidy Farwell added solid contributions for the men's and women's diving teams, respectively, as ASU divers placed first and second in three of the four diving events on the day.

 

ASU will next take to the road for the first time this season, traveling to West Lafayette, Ind., to take on the Purdue Boilermakers in dual meet action on Friday, Oct. 27.  The Sun Devil men and women will then face the Indiana Hoosiers on Saturday, Oct. 28 in Bloomington, Ind.
