TEMPE, Ariz. -- Arizona State baseball players Ryan Schroyer and Dustin Pedroia helped lead the blue team to a 4-0 victory over the red squad in a scrimmage during the second day of the 2002 Team USA Baseball National Team trials at Hi Corbett Field in Tucson.

Schroyer, who was 4-1 with a team-leading eight saves as ASU's closer in 2002, scattered one hit in two shutout innings. He relieved Houston All-American starter Brad Sullivan to preserve the 4-0 six-inning victory. Schroyer, who also played for the Team USA Junior National Team in 1998, maintained a 2.37 ERA during his sophomore year, striking out 75 batters in 60.2 innings.

Pedroia battled back from a 0-for-5 performance in the first scrimmage to go 1-for-2 with a double and scored a run in the victory. The shortstop set an ASU freshman record with 82 hits in 2002, leading the club with 27 multiple-hit games and was the only Sun Devil to play and start in all 58 games. He hit .347 with 13 doubles, 45 RBI and ended the season with an 11-game hitting streak intact after going 10-for-20 (.500) in the NCAA Regional Tournament.

Dustin Pedroia is aiming for a spot on the 2002 Team USA National squad.

Schroyer and Pedroia will participate in two more scrimmages (Saturday and Sunday) before finding out if they will be named to the final 22-member Team USA Roster. The duo are looking to join the ASU legacy of Sun Devils playing for Team USA, with recent players Willie Bloomquist (1998), Jon Switzer (2000), Casey Myers (2000) and Mike Esposito (2001) suiting up for the Red, White and Blue.

The 2002 Red, White and Blue Tour will include a 17-game tour of the United States and tournaments in Haarlem, The Netherlands and Messina, Italy. For more information on USA Baseball, visit their website at www.USABaseball.com.
