With the baseball season just a week away, Arizona State will begin the year ranked 12th by Baseball America and 27th by Collegiate Baseball in the preseason polls. ASU ended the 1998 season ranked second in both polls after finishing second at the College World Series with a 41-23 record.

Other Pac-10 schools in the preseason poll include USC (No. 1, Baseball America, No. 3 Collegiate Baseball), Stanford (No. 7 Baseball America, No. 8 Collegiate Baseball), Washington (No. 20 Baseball America, No. 24 Collegiate Baseball), California (No. 23 Baseball America) and Arizona (No. 26 Collegiate Baseball).

Two Sun Devils were named to preseason All-America teams as well. Senior thirdbaseman Andrew Beinbrink (third-team, Baseball America and second-team Collegiate Baseball) and junior infielder Willie Bloomquist (second-team Baseball America and third-team Collegiate Baseball) were both tabbed preseason All-Americans.
