TEMPE, Ariz. (www.TheSunDevils.com) -- Arizona State, off to a 21-1 start to the 2003 season, has swept the weekly honors as junior designated hitter Jeremy West has been named Pac-10 Baseball Player of the Week and junior right-hander Ryan Schroyer has been named Pac-10 Baseball Pitcher of the Week for Feb. 18-24, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
West, from Las Vegas, Nevada, hit .556 (5-for-9) with six runs scored, three home runs and 10 RBI as the Sun Devils earned four victories over Gonzaga, Dayton and Notre Dame last week. West broke out versus the 11th-ranked Irish on Feb. 22, with three hits, six RBI, two home runs, including a grand slam, to help ASU defeat Notre Dame, 16-3. In Sunday's series finale, West rallied the team by igniting the nine-run sixth inning with a two-out, two-run home run.
Schroyer, from Casa Grande, Ariz., pitched four scoreless innings out of the bullpen and recorded his fourth save of the year in ASU's 14-8 win over Notre Dame on Feb. 23. After striking out the side in the Sun Devils' win the day before, Schroyer shut down the Irish over the last three innings of play, recording his 12th save of his career. Now alone in sixth place in the ASU record books for career saves, he has yet to allow an earned run on the year (0.00 ERA) in 13.1 innings and has recorded 18 strikeouts.
The Player of the Week honor is the third for West in his career and the 67th selection all-time for ASU. The Pitcher of the Week is the first such honor for Schroyer, the 46th Sun Devil to earn the weekly recognition. Senior pitcher Jered Liebeck earned the honor earlier in the year after his complete-game, three-hit shutout of nationally ranked Long Beach State.
Arizona State, ranked as high as No. 2 in the country in the Sports Weekly/ESPN coaches poll, returns to action this weekend with a three-game series against Penn State (0-0). The non-conference series begins Friday at 7 p.m. and continues Saturday (1 p.m.) and Sunday (12 p.m.).
