DALLAS - The Arizona State baseball team has been ranked 15th in the 2012 National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) 15th annual Division I preseason poll.
The Sun Devils are set to play a total of 19 games against six ranked opponents this season, including five Pac-12 series'. They host a trio of top conference foes at Packard Stadium, including No. 26 Cal March 23-25, No. 22 Oregon State April 5-7 and No. 18 Arizona for two separate single-game sets on April 17 and May 16, respectively. ASU will also welcome No. 19 Cal State Fullerton for a two-game tilt March 27-28.
The Devils' season doesn't get any easier on the road as they travel to Los Angeles March 16-18 to face No. 20 UCLA and play No. 2 Stanford in Palo Alto, Calif., April 20-22. They finish the season with a three-game series against the Wildcats in Tucson, Ariz., May 25-27.
Florida is No. 1 in the poll, while South Carolina, North Carolina, Stanford and Texas A&M round out the top five.
ASU is the second-highest ranked Pac-12 team, trailing only No. 2 Stanford. Arizona comes in at No. 18, followed by No. 20 UCLA, No. 22 Oregon State and No. 26 Cal. The Pac-12's six ranked teams tie them for the second-most among conferences in schools represented, trailing only the SEC (8).
The NCBWA continues its tradition of NCAA Division I polls with its 2012 preseason predictions and weekly surveys. Weekly polls will resume from Feb. 21-June 28 with the finale following the 66th annual 2012 NCAA World Series in Omaha, Neb., at two-year-old TD Ameritrade Park.
The poll voters come from 40 college baseball writers and related media persons from throughout the nation. After a preseason Top 35 listing, the remainder of the polls will feature a national Top 30 beginning with the Feb. 21 NCBWA survey.
For a first look at the 2012 Sun Devil baseball team, ASU is hosting the annual Alumni Game at Winkles Field-Packard Stadium at Brock Ballpark on Feb. 11. First Pitch will be at 1 p.m. (MST) and admission is free.
The Sun Devils open the season by hosting a three-game series against Western Michigan from Feb. 17-19 at Packard Stadium in Tempe, Ariz. For the full 2012 schedule, click here.
