U.S. Olympic Trials Psych Sheets

Several swimmers with Arizona State ties will be competing in the U.S. Olympic Trials next week held at the Qwest Center in Omaha, Neb. Four Sun Devil men and seven Sun Devil women will try out for the 2008 Summer Olympics held in Beijing. The Olympic Trials will begin on June 29 and conclude on July 6. Team USA is limited to 26 males and 26 females with only the top two finishers in each event selected. A total of six athletes in both the 100 and 200 freestyle will be selected for the 400m and 800m relays.

Former Sun Devil All-American Nick Brunelli will give his Olympic dream a second shot after falling just shy of qualifying for the Olympic Games in 2004. Going into the Trials, Brunelli is seeded fourth in the 50 freestyle and sixth in the 100 freestyle. He will also compete in the 200 freestyle. Brunelli will be representing Sun Devil Aquatics.

All-American C.J. Nuess is currently seeded 10th in the 400 individual medley. Nuess, who trains in Washington at Pine Crest School, is ASU's record-holder in the short-course 400 IM. He will also compete in the 200 breaststroke, 200 IM and 1500 freestyle.

One of ASU's most decorated athletes, Caitlin Andrew will attempt to represent Team USA in the 100 butterfly, 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle. A five-event record-holder at ASU, Andrew is seeded 12th in the 100 fly going into the Trials. She has been training in Tempe with Sun Devil Aquatics.

Two other male athletes will be competing in the Olympic Trials. John Dwelley qualified for the Olympic Trials in the 100 butterfly. Sean Boyle will compete in the 200 freestyle and 100 and 200 butterfly.

Lindsey Brown and Ellis Schieman swam their final meet as Sun Devils this past season. Brown will swim in the 100 freestyle while Schieman qualified for the Trials in both the 400 freestyle and 200 butterfly.

Three athletes who will return to ASU women's team next season as well as one incoming freshman will also try out for Team USA in Omaha next week. Representing Sun Devil Aquatics, Ashton Aubry will compete in two events, the 100 and 200 butterfly. Teammate Jamie Martinez will also try for her spot on Team USA in the 200 fly as well as the 200 backstroke. Ashley Evans is set to compete in the 200 IM. Incoming freshman Jordyn Green qualified for the Olympic Trials in the 100 and 200 breaststroke.

The U.S. Olympic Trials will be broadcast live on NBC at 5 p.m. June 29 and July 4-6. The USA network will also broadcast the trials at 5 p.m. on June 30th and July 1-3. The preliminaries will begin at 11 a.m. while the finals are scheduled to start at 6:45 p.m. (CDT).

Mohammed Madwa has already qualified for the Olympic Games for his native Kuwait. One of ASU's most decorated divers and athletes of all-time, Joona Puhakka, will return to the Olympics for a third time to compete for his home country of Finland. Head diving coach Mark Bradshaw will guide Puhakka in Beijing.
