LONG BEACH, Calif. - The Arizona State University men's swimming and diving team concluded competition at the 2005 Pac-10 Men's Swimming Championships held at the Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool Saturday evening. The Sun Devils swam into fifth-place overall with a total of 311.50 points The diving portion of the championships were held last week in Federal Way, Wash.
The 1650 freestyle kicked off the final day of competition with freshman Lucas Azevedo swimming into eighth-place overall with a NCAA consideration time of 15:22.47. Micah Carlson was in action in the 1650 freestyle, finishing 14th, touching the wall in 16:06.63.
Up next for the ASU men was the 200 backstroke where Evan Rahaeuser took 14th with a time of 1:49.52. His preliminary time of 1:49.12 is a season-best time. Bobby Crowder (1:50.35), John Zemaitis (1:51.22), AJ Blusiewicz (1:52.21) and Kyle Horton (1:54.99) were also in action for the Sun Devils, finishing 17th, 18th, 21st and 22nd, respectively.
In the 100 freestyle, Jeff Barrett swam into eighth-place with a time of 45.04. Barrett's preliminary time of 44.13 is a season-best and NCAA consideration time that puts him ninth on ASU's top-ten list. Richie Crowder swam a time of 45.56 to place 16th for the Sun Devils, while Pat Fleming (46.09) and Tom Hickman (46.17) finished in 23rd and 24th, respectively.
The 200 breaststroke was next up for the ASU men, which saw Leonardo Martins take fifth-place with a NCAA consideration time of 1:59.66. Joey Clements also swam into the top eight, claiming eighth-place with a NCAA consideration time of 2:00.13. Rounding out the 200 breaststroke event was CJ Nuess (2:01.78) and Russell MacDonald (2:02.60) who finished in 12th and 19th, respectively.
David Kolozar hit the water in the 200 butterfly, finishing in sixth-place for the Sun Devils with a season-best and NCAA consideration time of 1:45.84. Also in action for ASU was Steve McDonald, who took 19th-place with a time of 1:51.87.
Concluding competition for the Sun Devils was the 400 freestyle relay team of Barrett, R. Crowder, Fleming and Hickman who touched the wall in a time of 3:01.46 to take sixth-place.
The Sun Devil diving teams are back in action at the NCAA Zone Diving Championships, Thursday-Saturday, March 10-12, in Oklahoma City, Okla.
