ON THE STARTING LINE
Following two meets on the road to open the season, the Arizona State cross country teams, fresh from an off week and record-setting national rankings, will play host to the Arizona State Invitational Friday evening at Kiwanis Park in Tempe. The women will run a 5,000m race at 4:45 p.m. with the men competing in an 8,000m race at 5:15 p.m.

THE ARIZONA STATE INVITATIONAL
The meet will feature six major universities and six area junior colleges. Arizona State, Arizona, Northern Arizona, Hawaii, Long Beach State, Utah and New Mexico State will join Glendale CC, Scottsdale CC, Mesa CC, Gateway CC, Phoenix College and Yavapai CC (women only) in the competition at Kiwanis Park. Those wanting to view the course map can do so here and select the men's or women's race. Results also will be available on www.TheSunDevils.com once the meets have concluded.

RECORD RANKINGS
With the release of the latest national Top 30 rankings last week, the Sun Devils have jumped to heights they have never seen on the men's side and almost to the same result for the women. In the MONDO men's poll, Arizona State went from unranked in the first two polls to No. 13, their highest rank in school history. The women, on the heels of winning the Roy Griak Invitational, secured the No. 4 spot in the FinishLynx poll, one spot below the program record No. 3 it attained in 2001.

CHAMPIONS AGAIN
In 1998, the Arizona State women finished first in the Roy Griak Invitational for the first time. Two years ago in 2001, the women returned to Minneapolis, Minn., for the meet captured its second title. Two weeks ago, the Sun Devils did it again, claiming their second title in three years while knocking off defending meet champion Michigan State. In their second title run, ASU also defeated defending champ MSU.

MIRRORING ANOTHER SEASON?
The last time the women won the Griak meet in 2001, they returned to action at Kiwanis Park for the Canyon West Classic and won the meet, giving them two meet titles in a row. With a win at the ASU Invitational this week, which is being run on the same course from the 2001 Canyon meet, the women would equal the program record for meet wins in a row.

INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCE
After a successful rookie campaign for the Sun Devils last year, Amy Hastings competed in the USATF Junior Cross Country Championships in Houston and finished third in the race. For her efforts, Hastings earned a spot on the USA's World Junior Cross Country Championships team that competed in Switzerland. In the world race, Hastings finished 20th overall, was the top American finisher and helped the team to fifth place in the world.

LAST TIME OUT
Arizona State turned numerous heads following a highly successful run at the Roy Griak Invitational in Minneapolis, Minn., Aug. 29. The women, ranked No. 20 in the nation, upset three Top 15 teams to win the race. Amy Hastings led the way for the second week in a row with her third-place finish. Anna Masinelli also scored well with a seventh-place finish while Jessica Crate (17), Desiree Davila (36) and Amanda Lyon (40) rounding out the scoring for the women.

On the men's side, Juan Reyes placed 16th overall to help the men to fifth and upset six nationally ranked foes. The unranked Sun Devils got scores from Aaron Aguayo (22), J.J. Duke (38), Roger Cahill (45) and Kal Clark (67).

NEXT TIME OUT ...
Next weekend will see the Sun Devils compete in two events, the Canyon West Classic and the NCAA Pre-National meet. The Canyon West will run Saturday at Kiwanis Park with the women's 5K at 8 a.m. and the men's 8K at 8:45 a.m. The Pre-National meet times are to be announced and will be contested in Cedar Falls, Iowa, home of Northern Iowa and the NCAA Championships.
