TEMPE, Ariz. - The 12th-ranked Arizona State baseball team defeated the Howard University Bison (0-1) 14-0 tonight in front of a crowd of 1,066 at Packard Stadium. The Sun Devils improve to 9-0, their best start since the 1980 season when they also began the season with a 9-0 record. It also marks the first time since 1996 ASU has posted back-to-back shutouts. Tonight's game is the first against an all-black school in nearly 60 years. Additionally, Arizona State played with wood bats for the third consecutive weekend.
Sophomore Chad Pennington picked up the win for Arizona State, improving to 2-0. Pennington went seven innnings, allowing five hits, eight strikeouts, and one walk.
The Sun Devils scored in every inning but the fifth. The scoring started in the first inning when shortstop Willie Bloomquist led off with an infield single. Bloomquist advanced to second on a passed ball and to third on a wild pitch. Outfielder Jeff Duncan then doubled down the leftfield line, scoring Bloomquist. Duncan advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Andrew Beinbrink. Bloomquist finished 2-for-4 on the night with one RBI and two runs scored. Beinbrink had a 2-for-3 outing, knocking in a run and scoring three. The Sun Devils took advantage of 10 walks, nine wild pitches, and five hit batters by the Bison pitching staff. Head coach Pat Murphy was happy with the win but says his team cannot relax.
"We've got to keep improving," Murphy said. "This was Howard's first game of the season and I'm sure they will play better tomorrow."
Twenty-five players got to see action for Arizona State and Murphy was glad he got the chance to see so many play.
"It is good to see kids in some different situations before we get into the heat of our season," Murphy said.
Picking up the loss for Howard was starting pitcher Jamaro Thomas (0-1). In four innings, Thomas gave up five runs (four earned) on four hits, four strikeouts, and four walks.
Offensively for the Bison, thirdbaseman Eunique Johnson hit a double, the Bison's only extra-base hit of the game. Johnson finished the night 1-for-3, also receiving Howards only base on balls.
The Devils continue the three-game series with Howard tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. at Packard Stadium.
