Box Score

TEMPE, Ariz. - The 12th-ranked Arizona State baseball team (13-4, 0-0) beat New Mexico (2-7) 5-4 after right fielder Andrew Beinbrink singled down the left field line to score shortstop Willie Bloomquist with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning to seal the Sun Devils' win.

Chad Pennington (3-2) was perfect from the bullpen, as he allowed no runs or hits with one strikeout in the ninth inning to earn the win. Starter Jon Switzer went five innings allowing two runs on five hits with two strikeouts. J.C. Ortiz (0-1) took the loss for the Lobos after giving up one run on two hits in 1 1/3 innings.

After being tied at four runs apiece for 2 1/2 innings ASU center fielder Dustin Delucchi went down swinging to start off the bottom of the ninth inning. However, consecutive singles by Bloomquist and left fielder Jay Sitzman would put two Sun Devils on base for designated hitter Chip Gosewisch. The Lobos then brought in Steve Elzy who got Gosewisch to fly out to right field. With two out Beinbrink was able to single in the game winning run.

"New Mexico's team in general was outstanding. They were playing in a series where they had all to give and nothing to lose," Sun Devil head coach Pat Murphy said. "I'm proud of the way we hung in there with a freshman on the mound. We still had another catcher's interference, but we didn't give up too many bases. "I'm really proud of Bloomquist and Sitzman and I'm proud of Penny. Pennington is just nails out of the bullpen."

ASU scored one run in both the first and fifth innings and got two runs in the third when Bloomquist singled and scored on Gosewisch's home run to left field.

Beinbrink led the Sun Devils going 3-for-5 with a home run and a double for three RBI. Gosewisch was 2-for-4 also with a home run and two RBI. Bloomquist was 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

For New Mexico shortstop Scott Candelaria was 3-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored. Second baseman Lon Yamaguchi was 2-for-5 with one run scored.

ASU returns to action Thursday, Feb. 18 when they take on BYU for a three game series starting at 5 p.m. at Packard Stadium.
