LAS VEGAS - The UNLV baseball team defeated 14th-ranked Arizona State, 5-4, in 10 innings on Tuesday afternoon in UNLV's home finale at Earl E. Wilson Stadium.

Junior outfielder Jesse Pryor led off the bottom of the 10th inning with an opposite field home run that cleared the right field fence. It was Pryor's seventh home run of the season. UNLV improved to 30-22 overall and Arizona State dropped to 33-21.

UNLV has now won 30 or more games in a season for the 20th time in the last 23 seasons.

The victory snapped a 21-game winning streak that the Sun Devils had over UNLV. The Rebels last defeated ASU, 3-2, on May 6, 1987.

UNLV received a strong pitching performance from Bill Scheffels. The junior right-hander pitched 8 innings, allowed 6 hits, 4 runs (3 earned), walked 2 and struck out 5. It was his best outing of the season. Sophomore right-hander Andy McCulloch recorded his fifth victory of the season. He pitched 2 innings and allowed no runs as he pitched his way out of a bases load jam in the top of the 10th inning.

Arizona State took the lead, 4-2, with two runs in the top of the ninth. First baseman Jeff Phelps knocked in the two runs with a single.

UNLV came right back in the bottom of the ninth. Junior third baseman Kevin Eberwein, who was 3-for-3, hit his 14th home run of the season to cut ASU's lead to 4-3.

Sophomore Ryan Ludwick and freshman catcher Ryan Hamill hit back-to-back triples to tie the score at 4-4 and force extra innings.

Senior right-hander Aaron Kramer pitched 8 strong innings for ASU. He allowed 7 hits, 3 runs, 1 walk and 8 strikeouts. Right-hander Chuck Crumpton (3-7) suffered the loss for ASU.

UNLV will conclude the 1998 regular season with a three-game WAC series this weekend (May 8-10) in Albuquerque, New Mexico, against the Lobos. UNLV is one half game out of the sixth and final spot for the WAC Tournament, which will be played on May 13-16 in San Diego.
