The No. 20 Arizona State women's swimming and diving team heads to Dallas, Texas this week. They will compete in a dual against SMU on Thursday and remain in Dallas for the SMU Classic. Teams competing at the SMU Classic include Alabama, North Carolina, SMU, USC and Wisconsin.
Scouting the Mustangs:
The Mustangs are currently ranked 12th by the CSCAA. They return six 2008 All-Americans to their program and finished 11th at last year's NCAA.
The Sun Devils fell in a close dual to the Kansas Jayhawks last weekend 149-147. Despite the loss, the Sun Devils saw great promise. 2008 NCAA qualifier Ashton Aubry won both the 100 and 200 fly. Christine Mauro took first in the 1000 free. Freshman Sasha Stephens took both the 100 and 200 back while fellow freshman Penelope Yamauchi won the 200 breast and 200 IM.
The Kids Are Alright
The Sun Devils freshmen class showed great promise at both last week's meet against Kansas and at ASU's intersquad. Stephens took both the 100 and 200 back against Kansas and also won the 200 back in the intersquad. Yamauchi showcased her versatility as a swimmer. The freshman from Santa Rosa, Calif., won the 200 breast and 200 IM on Friday and took first in the 500 free and 400 IM on Saturday. Freshman Jordyn Green placed second in the 200 breast behind Yamauchi on Saturday but won the event at Saturday's intersquad.
The Sun Devils return two All-Americans from last season. Jen Beckberger and Jess Perazzo were each honored last season with honorable mention All-American accolades for their contributions to relays.
Ashton at it Again!
After qualifying for the NCAA Championships last season as an individual, Aubry looks to pick up right where she left off last season. The junior from Leawood, Kan., got off to a solid start to her junior season as she won both the 100 and 200 fly against Kansas and again at the intersquad meet, putting up impressive early season times in the process.
The men and women's teams head to Los Angeles to open the Pac-10 season. The women compete against UCLA on November 14 while the men will take on the USC Trojans. The women then take on USC the following day while the men take part in the USC Invite.
