TEMPE – Fans will have their first opportunity of the 2012-13 athletic campaign to witness the Arizona State University wrestling team in action on Friday as the team hosts its annual Maroon & Gold Wrestle-Offs at the Riches Wrestling Complex in Tempe, beginning at 7 p.m. PT.
The annual intrasquad dual gives the student-athletes their first taste of action in a competitive atmosphere. Each weight class will feature two wrestlers essentially battling it out for their spot on the starting roster, making Friday’s bouts a bit more important than one might find typical of an intrasquad scrimmage. Fans are encouraged to come out to the competition and get a taste of the action up close and personal on Friday evening.
Each year, the team welcomes distinguished alumni from the past to serve as honorary captains of the Maroon and Gold teams. This season, those captains come in the form of all-time great NCAA Champion and four-time All-American Eric Larkin and two-time All-American Dave Douglas.
Friday’s bouts will be as follows:
125 Ares Carpio vs. Dalton Miller
133 Shane McGough vs. Josh Morin
141 Alex Schmersahl vs. Kyle McIntosh
157 Rush Hall vs. Codey Combs
174 Jacob Graham vs. Blake Stauffer
HWT Levi Cooper vs. Luke Bean
Fans are welcome to come enjoy the action. There will be a $5 entry charge at the door for a night’s worth of action. All proceeds go to the continued support of the ASU wrestling program.
The season is set to officially begin on Nov. 9 in Chapel Hill, N.C., as the Sun Devils will take on North Carolina to open an eventful couple of days that will see ASU take on Bloomsburg and Campbell on Nov. 10 before wrapping things up against The Citadel on Nov. 11.
