TEMPE, Ariz. - The No. 23 Arizona State baseball team (35-18 overall, 9-9 Pacific-10 Conference) defeated the Southern Utah Thunderbirds 16-7, behind a five hit performance from centerfielder Jay Sitzman tonight at Packard Stadium.

Sitzman led the Sun Devils offensively, going 5-for-6 with five RBI and five runs scored while collecting his first and second homeruns of the season. Catcher Casey Myers also contributed going 3-for-4 with a double and three RBI. Third baseman Andrew Beinbrink and rightfielder Jeff Duncan both went 2-for-3. Beinbrink hit a double and a homerun to finish with three RBI and three runs scored.

"Sitzman is starting to stay behind the ball," Head Coach Pat Murphy said. "He works really hard and is a great competitor."

With Arizona State leading by only a run, the Devils scored four runs in the sixth to break the game open. First baseman Mitch Jones led off the inning with a single to center, and Duncan followed with an infield single. Shortstop Willie Bloomquist walked to load the bases. Jones scored on a single to center by Sitzman. Beinbrink and Myers followed with sacrifice flies to center to score Bloomquist and Sitzman. After a walk to second baseman Brooks Conrad, designated hitter Brendan Hines flied to center to end the inning.

Starter Eric Doble lasted two and a third innings giving up three hits and three earned runs in a no decision. Sophomore Robby Milner collected his second win of the season going three and a third innings with five hits and one earned run.

For the Thunderbirds offensively, shortstop Gavin Duckworth went 4-for-5 with two RBI. Rightfielder Brian Kruse extended his hitting streak to 18 games in the eighth inning with a single to left. Designated hitter D.J. Penick went 2-for-5 with a double and two RBI.

Southern Utah's starter, Nick Roberts, picked up his sixth loss of the season going six innings, giving up eleven hits, nine runs and walking three batters.

The three-game series concludes tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. at Packard Stadium.
