SURPRISE, Ariz. -- Oregon State (1-0) senior starting pitcher Jake Postlewait struck out eight in five innings to lead the Oregon State Beavers to a 8-6 victory over Utah (0-1) in the first game of the 2004 Coca-Cola Spring Training Classic at Surprise Stadium.

The Beavers broke up the pitchers duel when first baseman Andy Jenkins (Salem, Ore.) drilled a two-out, two-run inside the park home run to center field. Utah center fielder Matt Ciaramella dove and just missed the ball, giving OSU its first inside-the-park home since April 18, 2000 (Drew Hedges).

Utah got a run back in the bottom of the fifth on a two-out single up the middle from designated hitter Tyler Kay to make it a one-run game.

OSU pushed its lead to 5-1 by way of three bases loaded walks in top of the sixth.

The Utes stormed back with a three-run inning of their own in the bottom of the sixth to cut the OSU lead to 5-4. Shortstop Ryan Khoury led of the inning with a solo homer to left field and third baseman Cort Wilson added a run-scoring single. Utah also plated a run on a perfectly executed double steal.

A two-out, two-run home run from Ciaramella in the bottom of the ninth brought the game to 8-6, but OSU freshman pitcher Dallas Buck closed out the victory to earn the save in his collegiate debut.

Left fielder Mike Lissman led the Beavers at the plate going 3-for-3 with one RBI and right fielder Jacoby Ellsbury was 1-for-4 with two runs scored and three stolen bases.

First baseman Mike Westfall and third baseman Cort Wilson each tabbed multi-hit games for the Utes.
