TEMPE, Ariz.- Arizona State University head football coach Bruce Snyder has named former University of California safety and former ASU football graduate assistant coach Ron English to his coaching staff, ASU announced Monday.
English replaces Donnie Henderson, who recently accepted a position coaching the defensive secondary at the University of Houston. English will coach the free and strong safeties at ASU.
"Ron is someone I am certainly familiar with, having recruited and coached him at Cal and tutored him on my staff here at ASU," says Snyder. "He is widely known as one of the up and coming young coaches and recruiters within the college ranks."
English, who is originally from Pomona, Calif., coached the previous two seasons at San Diego State University, where he was the Aztecs' defensive backs coach. There, he coached all-Western Athletic Conference cornerback Ricky Parker, now with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Before coaching at San Diego State, English was the outside linebackers coach at Northern Arizona University in 1995.
He was a graduate assistant at ASU under Snyder during the 1994 and 1995 seasons, working with the defensive line.
Prior to ASU, English coached the defensive backs at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, Calif.
English played for California under the tutelage of Snyder from 1987-90. English was a two-year starter at safety and a four-year special teams starter for the Golden Bears. He lettered four times and played in the 1990 Copper Bowl victory (17-15) over Wyoming.
English earned a bachelor's degree in 1990 from California in communications. While at ASU, English earned his master's degree in education administration.
