TEMPE, Ariz. -
The Arizona State University football team has accepted a bid to play in the 20th MAACO Bowl Las Vegas against the Boise State Broncos, the MAACO Bowl Las Vegas announced Sunday. The game will be played at Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada and will kick off at 5 p.m. Pacific/6 p.m. Arizona time on December 22. ESPN will provide national television coverage of the MAACO Bowl Las Vegas.
"The goal at the beginning of the year for any college football team is to play in a bowl game," said head coach Dennis Erickson. "I am so proud of our players and my coaching staff. We are grateful to the MAACO Bowl Las Vegas and the city of Las Vegas for giving us this opportunity. We are honored to be a part of it. We are playing one of the nation's top teams in Boise State as well."
Arizona State will be making its 25th bowl appearance and first since the 2007 Holiday Bowl. The Broncos finished the regular season ranked 8th in the AP poll and 6th in the USA Today Coaches Poll.
The Sun Devils have faced the Broncos once in their history. The only time the Sun Devils and Broncos have ever faced each other in football was in 1996, when ASU beat Boise State 56-7 in Tempe on its way to an undefeated regular season and a Rose Bowl berth.
Arizona State finished the regular season with a 6-6 mark and a 4-5 record in Pac-12 play. ASU is 12-10-1 all-time in Bowl games and will look to snap a two-game losing streak in the postseason. This will be the Sun Devils first appearance in the MAACO Bowl Las Vegas. Boise State enters the match-up with an 11-1 mark, including a 6-1 record in the Mountain West Conference. The Broncos defeated the Utah Utes 26-3 last season in the MAACO Bowl Las Vegas.
"We are looking forward to the chance to play a big time opponent on a national stage," said junior quarterback Brock Osweiler. "Las Vegas is an exciting location and we are thrilled to be able to play in a bowl game for our fans against a team like Boise State."
"To be able to go to a bowl game in a city like Las Vegas and play an opponent like Boise State, wow," said senior defensive tackle Bo Moos. "One last chance to play on national TV against a ranked opponent, that is why you play this game. I hope that the Sun Devil fans will be out in full force to cheer us on against the Broncos."
