TEMPE, Ariz. - Amy Hastings (Leavenworth, Kan.), a freshman on the Arizona State cross country and track and field teams, placed third at the United State's 2003 Junior World Cross Country Team Trials Saturday, placing third in the six kilometer event. The race, competed at Houston's Buffalo Bayou Park and hosted by the USA Track and Field Association, featured 43 runners with the Top 6 claiming the right to represent their country in March at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships in Lausanne, Switzerland.
Hastings clocked a 24:19.00 to finish two seconds ahead of the next athlete, Rebecca Walter of Michigan. Ahead of the Sun Devil harrier was first-place winner Clara Horowitz, a freshman at Duke who ran a 23:24.00, and runner-up Laura Hodgson, a freshman at Washington who crossed the line at 24:10.00. The final members of the team are fifth-place finisher Julia Lucas, a freshman at NC State, and Angela Homan, a freshman at Auburn.
The Sun Devil track and field team returns to action Feb. 28-March 1 in Seattle, Wash., for the Pac-10 Invitational.
