TEMPE, Ariz. - Arizona State's cross country teams open the 1998 season tomorrow at the UC Irvine Invitational. Third-year head coach Walt Drenth has brought in 29 newcomers on both the men's and women's teams while returning only 19 runners. ASU will compete in five meets, including the ASU Invitational on October 16, prior to the Pac-10 Championships which will be held Oct. 31 in Eugene, Ore.
The Sun Devils will take 20 competitors to UC Irvine (10 men/10 women) of which 10 are freshmen, nine are sophomores and one is a senior. This year's men's squad has added the nation's top recruiting class as three of the top four recruits - Fasil Bizuneh, Ron Buchanan and Isaiah Festa - chose to attend ASU. The women's class is headed by Centennial High School's Lisa Aguilera, the Arizona high school champion in the 800, 1600, 3200 and cross country last year. Priscilla Hein, the lone senior on the trip, was ASU's leading runner in 1996 and returns to action this year after redshirting last season.
