This Week: Arizona State travels to the 1998 NCAA Pre-National Invitational in Lawrence, Kan., for a test against some of the nations top cross country programs. The field includes 41 Division I programs, including nine of the top 25 womens teams and 13 of the nations top 25 mens teams. Other Pac-10 schools that will be at the meet include Arizona, California, Oregon, Stanford and Washington State.
Last Week: Arizona State sent its B teams to the Canyon West Invitational, hosted by the Valleys community colleges in Tempe. In the University races, ASUs men finished first and the women second. The Sun Devil men were led by sophomore David Grexs ninth-place finish in 26:49. Freshman Lisa Aguilera led the Sun Devil women with a fourth-place finish in 18:06.

Head Coach Walt Drenth: Veteran distance coach Walt Drenth is in his third year as Head Cross Country Coach at Arizona State University, after spending the previous six years (1990-95) at the College of William & Mary. Drenth led the Tribe to five Colonial Athletic Association cross country titles and one District II crown in 1990. He was named the CAA Cross Country Coach of the Year on five occasions and also tabbed as District II Coach of the Year in 1990 and 1995. While at William & Mary, Drenth led his harriers to three top 20 NCAA finishes (15th-1990, 18th-1994, 17th-1995). Prior to his stint at William & Mary, Drenth was the head cross country coach at his alma mater, Central Michigan, from 1985-90. During his stint at Central Michigan, he was named District IV Coach of the Year in 1989 after leading CMU to the District IV title. He led the Chippewas to two Mid-American Conference titles and named MAC Coach of the Year in both of those seasons, 1988 & 1989.
Youthful Exuberance: Arizona States cross country roster is littered with freshmen and sophomores as is its probable starting lineup. Of the eight probables this weekend for the men, five are freshmen and three are sophomores. On the womens side, four freshmen, three sophomores and one senior make up ASUs top eight performers.
