TEMPE, Ariz. - The 2001 Sun Devils unofficially opened the season with an 8-3 victory over a very talented and experienced team...ASU Alumni. With former players such as Mitch Jones, Andrew Beinbrink, Willie Bloomquist, Mikel Moreno, Michael Collins, Richy Leon and Dan McKinley (just to name a few), the ASU Alumni team was deep in talent and full of ASU history.
The Alumni game is a chance to experience the great ASU Baseball tradition. The Alumni, representing the past players that developed and cemented ASU as a college baseball powerhouse, and the current team representing the present and future players that carry on the ASU baseball legacy. For the Freshman or transfers, it's their chance to play against the players they watched and admired. For us Seniors, it's our chance to see and play once again with teammates from the past.
After coming out of the game and watching from the sideline, I realized the next time I played in this game, I would be in the other dugout. A strange realization. All in all, the Alumni game was a great success.
This week we are preparing for our official opening against Texas-Arlington this weekend. Texas-Arlington is a good team, that returns several players from last year's squad. Both teams will be ready to play, so it will be an enjoyable opening series to watch.
