ON HIS THOUGHTS ABOUT THE SPRING GAME AND SPRING PRACTICES:
"I thought today's practice - the offense looked the best it has all year - all spring. So from that standpoint I'm pleased. I'm not pleased that the defense did what it did - so, playing spring ball is maybe one of the most frustrating times because you're never happy....There were a lot fewer penalties - I thought we were more efficient, there were some things offensively that we did pretty well, I thought Davaren Hightower looked good running the football, we made some catches...Last Saturday the offense couldn't get a first down hardly, the defense dominated, so it's a maturial thing during spring. We did play a lot of players, I'm pleased with that, and we got out of it clean - we didn't get anyone hurt."
ON WHO HE BELIEVES, IN HIS EYES, HAS EMERGED AS A DARK HORSE:
"You know there are players that I thought really came on and started filling some gaps that were left because of graduation. I think Adam Archuleta, Eric Fields, I think they've really stepped it up. Devaren Hightower looked really good to me. Scottie Peters our left guard, didn't play particularly well, but he shows a lot of ability, he just needs to become comfortable with the spot. Certainly Tariq McDonald, we've moved him from back-up behind Lenzie (Jackson) to the starting flanker, and he's made some plays...Albry Battle, I think Albry Battle has had a real strong spring practice."
ON HIS OPINION OF CHAD ELLIOT (QB):
"Well I think that what we know about Chad, what we discovered this spring, is that he has real ability...A crisp arm, the ball is accurate, and Chad would probably be the first one to tell you he doesn't quite know the system yet, And I think what's important when playing quarterback is that the quarterback is predictable from our standpoint. Meaning we could design a play and we know he'll do that play. That's what he needs - we both need- to become more comfortable with. But in terms of going back and throwing the rock, the guy can go back and throw the ball, and he finds and open guy and they catch it, so there's some real positives there."
ON WHETHER HIS QUESTIONS ABOUT THE DEFENSIVE LINE HAVE BEEN ANSWERED OR IF HE WILL HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL CAMP TONTOZONA:
"Well, I thing we really need to take a hard look at Junior Ioane and Erik Flowers, I mean that's really important that they come in and we 'grease the slide' if you will, in terms of being on a fast track to get them up on running. But I like Albry Battle a lot, I like Ryan Reilly - a strong, good player inside. I think Quincy Yancy is gonna be a real good player. We need those other two kids coming to...and emerge though."
ON THE PRESEASON ACCOLADES AND EXPECTATIONS BEING PLACED ON THIS TEAM:
" I think this team doesn't need to hear that, we may be overrated right now...I do like the team but I do think that we have not arrived. We are quite a ways away from being really the team that maybe people think we might be. So, until we're there, we're not there."
ON WHAT KIND OF SHAPE J.R. REDMOND IS IN:
"Well, we didn't play him much today, I think I've seen him tackled about as many times I want to see him tackled. He's a guy that has a lot of reservoirs, I don't know where it comes from, but I don't know if I've ever seen him tired, I mean he doesn't get tired...He'll come in in great shape, he's genetically gifted, he's mentally tough, he'll come in in great shape, he'll be fine."
ON WHETHER THE OFFENSE HAS PROVEN THAT IT COULD PRODUCE BASED ON TODAY'S DISPLAY:
"Well we did today, now if you would have asked me on Saturday, I wouldn't have given you a nickel for the offense. The thing that we've got to be able to do is every down, every day, every practice be able to show the consistency that they had today. They don't deserve a lot of credit until they do it day after day."
ON TEAM SPEED:
"I think that today's football is speed. If I were in the NFL I would draft speed. In college I recruit the best I can, as fast players as I can get. That's how Pat Tillman played, that's how Adam Archuleta is gonna play. Derrick Rodgers, now he was a big name, but he was special....If we're as fast as last years team or faster, we're gonna win some games."
ON THE SCHEDULE AND THIS YEARS OPENER AGAINST THE UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON:
"That's a great opener if you win it, that's a terrible opener if you don't. It puts a slant on your whole season, or it can. Washington if you remember back two years ago, we won the game. But think back to what Washington did after that game, they marched through the conference, they did a great job...but it kept them out of the Rose Bowl, that one game. So, boy it's important, it's a big game...Right now we're not mature enough probably to play that game. We need a great summer and a great camp and then maybe we'll be mature enough to play that game."
