Six weeks before he was supposed to start his college career, Jeff Larish was still looking for a place to play.

Larish, a lanky 6-2, 165-pounder at the time, had been picked by the Chicago Cubs in 32nd round of the 2001 draft after hitting .441 with a school-record 12 homers at McClintock High School in Tempe, Ariz. But Larish, who weighed closer to 155 pounds dripping wet a year earlier, was set on going to college to fill out his frame and work on his game.

Since no Division I offers were on the table, the left-handed hitter was scouring the junior colleges. Chandler-Gilbert Community College, home of the Coyotes, appeared to be his new home.

Then, an offer came. From perennial power Arizona State, no less.

"I talked with ASU throughout the summer," Larish said earlier this week. "They tossed an offer out to me, and I snatched it up."

Both parties couldn't be happier.
