CASEY at bat -- Junior Casey Myers (Casa Grande) returns as the Devils leading RBI with 51 in 1999. Myers will see most of his time as the designated hitter but could also see time in the infield at first base. Myers has been named Pac-10 Player of the Week three times (twice as a freshman and once as a sophomore). He put together an 18-game hitting streak last season and enters 2000 with a two-game hitting streak. He had 13 multiple-RBI games in '99 including a seven RBI performance vs. Califormia. Myers was also a 2000 GTE Academic All-American (first-team). He is a double major with a 4.0 GPA in math and economics.

DUNCAN PATROLS CENTERFIELD -- Junior outfielder Jeff Duncan (Frankfort, Ill.) has started off the 2000 season with a bang. Batting at a .417 clip, Duncan already has three stolen bases in as many attempts. He is leading the team with eight RBI in three games and is on a three-game hitting streak. Duncan leads the squad with three multiple-RBI games.

around the bullpen -- ASU's returning pitching corps. account for 78% of the squad's wins last year. The Devils lost two significant contributors in Chuck Crumpton and Charlie Williamson but the rest of the staff is intact. Arizona State returns Chad Pennington (Hamilton, Ohio) and Jon Switzer (Houston, Tx.) who won seven games each as well as Will Waldrip who picked up 10 victories on the mound. Juniors Drew Friedberg (Middleton, Wis.) and Robby Milner (Phoenix) added three wins a piece.

OUT WITH THE OLD, IN WITH THE NEW -- Gone are names like Willie Bloomquist and Andrew Beinbeink. Say hello to Mike Lopez, Dennis Wyrick and Jonah Martin. Lopez (Yavapai) will anchor the infield from third base while Wyrick (Azusa, Calif.) will field the ball from shortstop. Martin (Waianae, Hi.) will patrol rightfield for the Devils. Lopez, who redshirted in '99, comes to ASU via Yavapai CC while Martin transferred from L.A. City JC. Wyrick, a true freshman, was a two-time San Gabriel Valley Player of the Year selection. All three have looked impressive in the early going. Lopez is batting .500 while Wyrick comes in at .455. Martin has two stolen bases and has been perfect in the field.

AIN'T LOVE GRAND -- Righthanded pitcher Luke Field (Littleton, Co.) proposed to his girlfriend in a very unique way over the holidays. On New Year's Eve, Field and his girlfriend, Casse Watkins (Ellinwood, Kan.), went to Packard Stadium. None of the stadium lights were on as they made their way to the press box. Field had made arrangement with a manager to be there. When the couple got to the press box, the manager turned on the field lights. Spelled out in bats and baseballs were the words "Will you marry me". Field's girlfriend said yes. No date has been set yet.

Murphy has never had a player declared ineligble for a season.

"From those modest beginnings, Murphy has carved a unique college career, first as a player but most of all as a coach. ... And he's risen to the top of his profession."
--John Manuel
Baseball America, 7/6-19/98

TWO-SPORT ATHLETE? A little known fact around the ballpark is that centerfielder Jeff Duncan is a big hockey fan. The native of Illinois played hockey as a kid growing up all the way through high school. What position you ask? Center, of course.
