TEMPE, Ariz. (www.TheSunDevils.com) -- Arizona State junior shortstop Dustin Pedroia is one of 30 college baseball players named to the initial watch list for the 2004 Golden Spikes Award by USA Baseball. The Golden Spikes Award is given annual to the top amateur baseball player in the country.

Pedroia (Woodland, Calif.) is second in the Pac-10 hitting .411 (53-for-129) with 16 doubles, five home runs and 29 RBI. He has recorded at least one hit in 27 of ASU's 31 games and leads the Sun Devils with 14 multi-hit games. Pedroia is also amongst the league leaders in hits (53, 1st), runs scores (42, 1st), doubles (16, T-1st), total bases (84, 1st), slugging percentage (.651, 3rd) and on base percentage (.513, 3rd).

Pedroia was also named to the initial Golden Spikes Award watch list last season en route to an All-American campaign in which he hit .404 with an ASU and Pac-10 single-season record 34 doubles. He was the starting shortstop in 2002 and 2003 for the USA Baseball National Team.

Arizona State has had three previous winners of the Golden Spikes Award. Bob Horner (1978), Oddibe McDowell (1984) and Mike Kelly (1991) all won the prestigious award during their Sun Devil careers. USA Baseball will announce their five finalists for the 2004 Golden Spikes Award in June.
