Pac-12 Release | NFCA Top 25 | USA Softball Top 25
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Alix Johnson picked up her first career Pac-12 weekly honor, being named the Player of the Week on Tuesday afternoon. This is Arizona State softball's 75th weekly honor for the program and third this season.
Johnson, who was named ESPN Preseason All-America, posted a team-best .750 batting average, 1.500 slugging percentage, 12 runs scored, nine hits and three home runs last weekend. The junior outfielder started in all six games and had a career performance against East Carolina on Saturday, March 2. Against the Pirates, Johnson hit two homers and tied her career best for hits in a single game (four), went 4-for-4 at the plate with five RBI and three runs scored.
She also went 2-for-2 against North Dakota on Thursday, Feb. 28, and 1-for-2 against No. 22 Baylor with two walks and one stolen base. She is third on the team with five homers and moved up in the career record books in homers (t13th, 21) and RBI (16th, 102).
The Sun Devils went 5-1 over the weekend to improve to 21-1 on the year. ASU rewrote the program's best start to a season, 21-0, on Saturday before suffering their first loss of the season to No. 22 Baylor on Sunday, March 3. Johnson is hitting .328 this season and has 20 hits, 22 runs scored and is a perfect 7-for-7 on stolen bases.
Johnson, a USA Softball Top 50 Player of the Year nominee, is softball's third Pac-12 honoree this season. ASU's first weekly honors were on Feb. 12 when Cheyenne Coyle and Dallas Escobedo swept the conference nod. Oregon's Cheridan Hawkins picked up the Pitcher of the Week award alongside Johnson.
For the fourth straight week, Arizona State is ranked third in both the USA Today/NFCA and ESPN.com/USA Softball polls. They will continue their home stand as they host their fourth home tournament, the Diamond Devil Invitational. The Sun Devils open with a double header against UC Davis and Pitt, starting at 4:30 p.m. MT. For the complete ASU softball schedule, click here.
