TEMPE, Ariz. -- Arizona State University's All-American baseball player Casey Myers will be honored tomorrow morning at the 5th Annual March of Dimes Arizona Athletic Awards banquet as the Outstanding Amateur Athlete.

Myers, who was the 2000 Pac-10 Player of the Year with a .412 batting average and an All-American, was named a preseason All-American earlier this month and is a strong candidate for National Player of the Year honors. The senior catcher is coming off successful hand surgery on Nov. 8 and will be ready for the season opener vs. Texas-Arlington on Jan. 26. The injury to his right wrist is described as a sprain and underwent the minor surgery for preventive reasons according to ASU baseball trainer Kenny McCarty. It is a very similar injury to the one Arizona Diamondback star Erubiel Durazo suffered last year. Full recovery is expected for Myers.

The prestigious award will be presented as part of a banquet held from 7:30-9:00 a.m. at the Hyatt Regency Phoenix. Ironically, Myers will be accepting the same award his younger brother, Corey, a current player in the Arizona Diamondbacks farm system, won in 1999.

Arizona State University head basketball coach Rob Evans will also be accepting an award at the banquet as the winner of the Outstanding Sports Leadership award.
