Arizona State's Willie Bloomquist turned in a two-for-four performance at the plate with one RBI in the USA National Baseball Team's 8-4 victory over Canada before 1,112 fans on Thursday night at Thomas J. Dodd Stadium, home of the Norwich Navigators (Class AA, Eastern League). The game was the second of a three-game set with Canada on the team's Northeastern tour. The win, the USA's seventh straight, boosted the team's overall season record to 25-9. The Canadian National Team's record dropped to 9-9.
Shane Nance (5-0, 1.54 ERA) tossed six innings and allowed three runs on five hits to earn the win. He struck out 10 and walked two. Reliever Matt Ginter (1-0, 4 SV) came on to pitch two-thirds of an inning of hitless ball to pick up his team-leading fourth save of the season for the Americans.
On the evening, the USA National Team had eight runs on 13 hits with no errors. For the Canadians, four runs on seven hits with one error.
The USA Baseball National Team and Canada conclude their three-game Northeastern tour on Friday night at Yale Field, home of the New Haven Ravens (Class AA, Eastern League). Casey Fossum (2-1, 4.94 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Americans.
Bloomquist has upped his average to .303 with 12 runs scored and 10 RBI. He has five doubles and one homerun on the season. He is tied for second on the team in stolen bases with five on the year.
This year's World Championship is slated for July 21-August 2, in Italy and Sicily and will feature the following teams. In Group A: China, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Italy, Japan, Panama, South Africa and Spain. In Group B: Australia, Canada, Chinese Taipei, Korea, Netherlands, Nicaragua, Russia and the United States.
