Sophomore lefty Jon Switzer pitched seven strong innings recording nine strikeouts as Arizona State baseball completed a three-game sweep of Utah with a 9-1 victory this afternoon at Packard Stadium. ASU improves to 3-0 on the year while the Utes fall to 0-3.

ASU struck early scoring five runs in the bottom of the second inning. Designated hitter Brendan Hines led off the inning with a solo shot to left field. After Brooks Conrad walked, first baseman Jeff Phelps doubled to center, scoring Conrad. Shortstop Dennis Wyrick walked to put two men on base for centerfielder Jeff Duncan. With two outs, Duncan hit his first collegiate homerun over the rightfield fence.

The Devils would score two more in the third and one run each in the seventh and eighth innings to put the game out of reach.

Sophomore Jon Switzer picked up his first win of the season going seven innings, allowing only three hits, no walks and tied a career-high with nine strikeouts. Switzer retired 20 of 24 batters faced (three hits and a hit by pitch). Relievers Robby Milner and Jered Liebeck each pitched an inning to close out the game for the Sun Devils.

Utah's only run came on a solo homer to rightfield by first baseman Nate Weese in the seventh inning. Starting pitcher Ryan Bailey took the loss for the Utes, lasting only 2.1 innings, allowing five hits, seven runs and three walks.

Arizona State is next in action on Thursday, January 29 at 3 p.m. against Brigham Young at Packard Stadium. For ticket information, please call the ASU ticket office at 480-965-2381.
