Men
Finished 10th at the NCAA Championships held at Auburn...recorded a 6-4 dual record including victories in last four dual meets of the year and six of the last eight...finished sixth at the Pac-10 Championships...qualified seven swimmers for the NCAA Championships...junior All-American Francisco Sanchez finished in eighth place in the 50 free (19.83), 14th in the 100 fly (47.67) and eighth in the 100 free (47.05)...in the relay portion, the team of Sanchez, sophomore Pablo Abal, freshman Scott VonSchoff and junior Craig Hutchison garnered a third-place finish of 2:54.03 in the 400 free relay...ASU's 400 medley relay team set a Mona Plummer pool record (3:19.62) versus USC (Nov. 15)...Hutchison, sophomore Ivan Rodriguez-Mesa and Sanchez all competed at the World Championships in January...Sanchez (second) and Hutchison (eighth) both recorded top-eight finishes in the 50 free at the U.S. Open Swimming Championships last December...Sanchez was named the team's MVP while Abal was the squad's Most Improved Swimmer...sophomore diver Allan Sonkin turned in a great performance at the 1998 Pac-10 Diving Championships held in Tempe, placing third in the 3-meter, fourth in the 1-meter and third in the platform...junior Guillermo Diaz DeLeon (first-team), Hutchison (first), Abal (second-team), senior Juan Beltran (second), junior Scott Brown (Honorable Mention), freshman Rory McVay (HM) and sophomore Greg Plank (HM) were all named to the Pac-10's All-Academic Team...swimming head coach Dr. Ernie Maglischo announced his retirement after leading the Sun Devils to a top-11 finish for the third straight year...Michael Chasson, a former Stanford assistant, was appointed as ASU's new head coach on May 20th...Chasson came to ASU from Harvard University where he served in the same capacity for the last seven seasons.

Women
Finished 29th at the NCAA Championships in Minneapolis...posted a 7-4 dual-meet record, including four straight victories to open the season...also authored a first- and a pair of second-place finishes in invitational competition...recorded a sixth-place finish at the Pac-10 Championships...included in team's nine victories were wins over top-15 opponents Florida and UCLA...qualified five student-athletes for the NCAA Championships...sophomore Carolyn Adel (400 IM) and junior Camilla Johansson (200 back) both earned All-America honors...Adel also placed 16th in two different events at the World Championships...22 of 25 swimmers achieved personal best times...junior All-America diver Katrina Pfeuffer recorded six first-place finishes during the regular season in both the 1- and 3-meter competition...Pfeuffer also placed second in the platform, eighth in the 3-meter and fifth in the 1-meter at the 1998 Pac-10 Championships held in Tempe ...Adel was named the team's MVP...Adel was also the winner of the team's NCAA Performance Award...sophomore Casey Murphy earned the Mona Plummer Award for her high academic, athletic and leadership qualities...Lauren Morelli was recognized as the team's outstanding freshman...team had a cumulative GPA of 3.30 for the '97 fall semester...sophomore Sarah Adams, Adel, sophomore Amanda Clegg, junior Tiffany Houser, Johansson and Pfeuffer were all named College Coaches Academic All-Americans...Adams (first-team), sophomore Alyson Miller (first), Pfeuffer (first), Clegg (second-team), Adel (Honorable Mention), sophomore Mandy Contreras (HM), sophomore Stephanie Elwonger (HM), Houser (HM), Murphy (HM), senior Melissa Newman (HM) and sophomore Tennille Taylor (HM) were all named to the Pac-10's All-Academic Team...Head Coach Tim Hill was inducted into the Southern Illinois University Sports Hall of Fame.
