TEMPE, Ariz. - Arizona State student-athlete Brandon Magee has agreed to a contract with the Boston Red Sox, the organization announced Thursday. Magee will continue to play for the Sun Devil football team during the 2012 season and will have the opportunity to continue his football career in the National Football League following that.

Magee, who is entering his fifth season with the football team and was a three-year letterman with the baseball team, was selected in the 23rd round (721st overall) by the Red Sox in the 2012 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.

He won consecutive Pac-10 titles and twice went to the College World Series as a member of the ASU baseball team for three seasons from 2009-11. He appeared in more than 25 games and made three starts as an outfielder, and recorded his first career hit on March 6, 2010, against UC Riverside at Surprise Stadium.

Magee, who sat out the entire 2011 season due to an Achilles tear suffered in preseason camp, has embraced the role of senior leader for the Sun Devil football team over the past year. He held a fan forum on Twitter in the spring and is set to be a guest host on 620 AM in Phoenix on July 13 from 2-6 p.m.

He appeared in all 12 games, including 11 starts, during the 2010 football season en route to a career-high 73 tackles and 1.5 sacks. He recorded a season-high 13 tackles in a 30-29 double-overtime win over Arizona in Tucson, Ariz.

Magee started the first game of the 2009 season, recording five tackles (four solo), 2.5 tackles for loss, a 10-yard sack and an interception, and appeared in all 12 games. He finished the year with 34 tackles (21 solo), seven tackles for loss and a pair of sacks. He played in eight games as a reserve linebacker and on special teams as a freshman in 2008, and collected five tackles (three solo) in his collegiate debut, a season-opening win over NAU on Aug. 30.

A 2008 graduate of Centennial High School in Corona, Calif., Magee is one of several players on this year's roster from Centennial, along with Jarrid Bryant, Michael Eubank and William Sutton.

Other ASU student-athletes who have lettered in both baseball and football include Clyde Dougherty (1946), Tom Futch (1955), Dave Graybill Sr. (1954-56), J.D. Hill (1968) and Mike Jones (2006-08).

The Red Sox are the third MLB team to draft Magee, as he was selected by the Tampa Bay Rays in the 29th round (863rd overall) of the 2008 MLB draft and by the Oakland A's in the 21st round (646th overall) of the 2011 MLB draft.

The Sun Devils had an NCAA-best 10 selections in the 2012 MLB draft, giving ASU 31 draft picks in head baseball coach Tim Esmay's three seasons at ASU, which is the most of any Div. I school in that time span and five more than the next closest team, Florida. ASU has had double-digit draft picks for three consecutive years and a total of 18 in program history.
