The Arizona State swimming and diving teams began 2009 with a tri-meet dual against Washington and Oregon State. The women's team (1-5) earned a 197-91win against the Beavers. The Sun Devils were ahead going into the final event against Washington, but the Huskies pulled out a one point win over the Sun Devils 144-143. ON the men's side, the men (0-4) fell 127-98.
Jen Beckberger, Cameron Bradshaw, and Brittany Jumer earned double wins for the Sun Devils. Beckberger took first in the 200 free with a time of 1:50.36. She later one the 100 free, clocking in at 51.04. Bradshaw and Jumer both swept the diving events. Bradshaw tallied scores of 322.80 and 318.00 in the 1 and 3 meter respectively while Jumer earned her wins with scores of 280.20 and 300.45. All four dives meet the NCAA standard.
In the men's 200 free, the Sun Devils went one and two. Sean Boyle reached the wall first at 1:40.27 with Vinicius Waked close behind at 1:41.66. The women also went one and two in 200 breast with two freshmen leading the campaign. Penelope Yamauchi earned a victory in the 200 breast with a time of 2:16.93 while Jordyn Green clocked in at 2:17.85.
Max Laney won the 200 back in 1:50.22. In the women's 50 free, Jess Perazzo and Samantha Caldwell tied with times of 23.86. On the men's side, Mohammed Madwa placed second at 21.22. Laney also placed second in the 200 IM at 1:54.74. Ashton Aubry was the runner-up in the 200 fly at 2:03.65.
The men's team will head to Dallas on Friday January 16. They will take on both Northwestern and SMU in a tri-dual before competing in the Dallas Morning News Classic. The women will be idle until January 23 when they, along with the men, host Stanford.
