Mike Chismar, a 36-year veteran of Sun Devil Athletics, plays a key role in the leadership of Sun Devil Athletics as the Senior Associate Athletics Director for Operations and Facilities. His main area of emphasis is internal operations, including event management and procurement, as well as oversight of all Sun Devil Athletics’ physical plant and subsequent construction projects. Chismar also currently oversees Equipment Operations, serves as liaison to the department’s food service provider, is a member of the ASU Sustainability team and coordinates all football team travel arrangements. This includes postseason travel and the football team’s annual summer trip to Camp Tontozona in Payson. During his administrative tenure, Chismar has provided leadership and management for Marketing & Revenue Generation, Media Relations, Sports Medicine, Sports Performance and Sun Devil Sports Marketing.
Chismar has been the coordinator of numerous high profile events at Arizona State University throughout his career, including the Fiesta and Cactus Bowls, the NFL’s Arizona Cardinals, assisted in Super Bowl XXX in 1996, headed up the 2013 Pac-12 Football Championship Game and is currently a member of the Phoenix Final Four LOC. He has also served as the tournament manager for the NCAA Men’s Basketball West Regional Championships on four different occasions, the tournament manager for the NCAA Women’s Golf National Championship and has frequently been the tournament manager for NCAA baseball, golf, softball, gymnastics and tennis postseason events.
In preparation for President Obama’s visit to Sun Devil Stadium for the 2009 Spring Commencement, Chismar served as the lead athletic contact and provided logistical support for the U.S. Secret Service and federal agents.
In addition, Chismar has played a primary role in the opening of numerous athletic facilities at ASU. He was a part of the Carson Student-Athlete Center, Farrington Softball Stadium, Sun Devil Soccer Stadium, Verde Dickey Dome (SDA indoor practice facility), the Weatherup Center Basketball Facility and the remodel of the Sun Devil Sports Performance building. The Weatherup Center has received LEED Gold Certification, the first athletic building of its type to receive LEED Gold status. Chismar is currently overseeing the renovations at Phoenix Municipal Stadium in preparations for the arrival of Sun Devil baseball and is also currently a member of the team involved in the renovation project of Sun Devil Stadium.
Chismar serves as the Secretary for the Tempe Sports Authority Foundation, which plays host to the annual Courage Awards. Recipients of the awards are honored and recognized for overcoming challenges with their exceptional and inspirational grace. Additionally, the TSAF is a nonprofit organization that provides scholarship opportunities and offers programs to build a healthy spirit, mind and body in Tempe’s youth.
Chismar, an Arizona State University graduate, began his Sun Devil career as Equipment Coordinator in 1980. He has been involved in collegiate athletics his entire life as his father, the late Ron Chismar, was a Sun Devil Football assistant coach form 1980-1983 under ASU Sports Hall of Fame Head Coach Darryl Rogers.
A native of Canton, Ohio, he is married to the former Jina Solis. The Chismars have a daughter, Hannah, and a son, Matthew, and reside in Chandler.Contact Information
