Director of Athletics Kevin White:
It is with deep and sincere disappointment that Arizona State University makes this statement today. To be sure, these events are not lost on the University and its employees.
ASU is opposed to all forms of legal and illegal sports wagering. We believe sports competition should be appreciated for the inherent benefits related to participation of student-athletes, coaches and institutions in fair contests, not the amount of money wagered on the outcome of the competition.
We are disturbed and saddened by the events today regarding former ASU basketball players. It is our goal as an athletic department and a University to make our student-athletes better aware of the pressures and outside influences associated with these types of activities. We also must make them better prepared to deal with these pitfalls and create awareness of communication and trust within our athletics community.
The events of four years ago, which have culminated in these indictments, are most distressing. It is our hope that we can turn this situation into an educational opportunity. Again, Arizona State understands that it is not immune to this problem.
The NCAA membership has adopted specific rules prohibiting athletics department staff members and student-athletes from engaging in sports wagering activities as they relate to intercollegiate or professional sporting events. ASU believes in adhering to those rules and has routinely educated staff and student-athletes on the dangers of sports wagering. ASU continues to do so.
It is also important to add that this particular case happened four years ago. The men's basketball squad has completely turned over in terms of personnel. Even the coaching staff is different. Our current head coach and team members are not involved in this case. We are requesting that these individuals not be interviewed regarding this case. Also, we ask that the remainder of our coaches and student-athletes of other sports not be interviewed. They do not deserve to be a part of this story in any form or fashion. Thank you.
