Former Sun Devils and current Major League second basemen Jason Kipnis and Dustin Pedroia will be representing the Maroon and Gold in the 2013 Major League Baseball All-Star Game tonight, July 16, at Citi Field in New York City.

This marks Kipnis’ MLB All-Star debut, making him the 17th different Sun Devil to appear in the MidSummer Classic, including one coach (Don Wakamatsu-Seattle Mariners-2009). This is the second most among all NCAA schools and trails only USC with 21.

Pedroia is making his fourth MLB All-Star appearance, tying him with Paul Lo Duca and Sal Bando for the third most selections among all Sun Devils (Barry Bonds and Reggie Jackson both lead with 14).

ASU has now had a total of 56 selections to the MLB All-Star Game, dating back to 1968 with Rick Monday of the Oakland A’s, and has had at least one representative in 38 All-Star Games. This mark also ranks as the second most among all NCAA schools, behind only USC with 69.

While at ASU, Pedoria was a finalist for the prestigious Golden Spikes Award and became only the fourth player in ASU history to earn three consecutive First-Team All-Pac-10 awards. A two-time National Defensive Player of the Year, Pedroia put together an unbelievable "Ironman" streak by starting in all 185 games of his ASU career and ranks seventh with a .384 career batting average. He fell just two hits shy of reaching 300 for his career, but still ranks fourth with 298 career hits and third with 71 doubles.

Kipnis hit .378 in his two seasons at Arizona State, earning Pac-10 Newcomer of the Year honors in 2008 and Pac-10 Player of the Year honors in 2009. He bashed 30 homers in his two seasons, recorded a .996 fielding percentage and stole 51 bases, and his .688 career slugging percentage is good for third best in school history. He was a Second Team All-American in 2008 and a unanimous First Team.
