TEMPE, Ariz.—Former assistant coach Maggie Germaine Ethier returns to the Gym Devil coaching staff as co-head coach, Arizona State gymnastics head coach John Spini announced today.
Ethier, who served as an assistant coach for the Sun Devils from 2005-08, will formally return to the gym in a volunteer capacity alongside Spini, assistant coach Tom Ward and the newest Gym Devil assistant coach Hollie Vise. Ethier has maintained a constant presence around the program even after her first stint as assistant coach.
“I am excited about give more of my time and being more involved in all aspects of our sport,” said Ethier. “I’m planning on assisting with beam and floor routine and more importantly, placing an emphasis on the fine tuning and detail of all the routines we compete.”
As a gymnast, Ethier (née Germaine) was a two-time All-American and a three-time Pac-10 All-Academic. She also holds the Arizona State record for most perfect 10’s scored in a career with nine (1 V, 2 BB, 6 FX).
“Maggie is one of the best coaches I’ve worked with technically,” said head coach John Spini. “As a former student athlete and assistant coach at Arizona State, it brings a lot of continuity to the program. As we move forward, Maggie is going to bring a lot of stability to recruiting and into the gym.”
The irony of Ethier’s title was not lost on the Sun Devil great.
“The title of volunteer co-head coach rarely goes together and sounds a little bit crazy,” jokes Ethier about her new appointment. “But I’m very excited about this team’s chance at success. We again have a young team full of talent and I can’t wait to get back in the gym and see how everyone ticks.”
Ethier is married to former Arizona State baseball player and Los Angeles Dodger All-Star Andre Ethier, with which she has two children.
