The Arizona State swimming program has a bright future ahead thanks to Anna Olasz. Olasz, an incoming freshman from Hungary, recently took home the top spot at the 16th annual European Cup in Open Water Swimming.
Olasz finished her Final 5K in 58:01.04 and her 10K in 2:02:53.35 for a combined time of 3:00:54.39 as the top finisher. Her time defeated second place Nicole Cirillo of Italy by 1:49.79.
The competition consisted of five stages, each ranging in distance from 5K to 10K. The tour made six different stops: May 24th in Bat Yam, Isereal; June 22nd in Balotonfured, Hungary; July 28th, in Kocaeli Turkey; August 3rd in Hoorn, Netherlands; August 10th in Navia Spain, and the Final was August 17th & 18th in Hamburg, Germany. The Final consisted of both a 5K and a 10K on successive days and the champion was crowned based off combined times from his or her best two stages, as well as the final.
The governing body of aquatic sports in Europe, LEN, awards 21,000 Euros in total prize money.
Olasz will lead a class of six femaie freshmen swimmers into the Sun Devil program this upcoming season.
