Jon Rahm One Round From Defending Cullum Title

Sun Devil Jon Rahm is in position to defend his title after the first two rounds of the 54-hole Bill Cullum Invitational held at Wood Ranch Golf Club in Simi Valley, Calif. (par 72/6,819 yards).

The sophomore shot  7-under 137 (67-70) that included nine birdies and he leads Mark Anguiano of Cal State Fullerton by one stroke. San Diego shot a 19-under 557 (282-275) and leads by six strokes over the Sun Devils who are at 13-under 563 (284-279).

The teams will play 18 holes on Tuesday to finish the event.

Rahm now has played 57 rounds in his 19-tournament career and has had his score count 56 times. He has shot par or better in 31 rounds and has 19 rounds in the 60s.

The tournament has been played every year since 1996 and Sun Devils have had good success in this event. Rahm shot 12-under 204 last year (72-65-67) to win the tournament, while Spencer Fletcher won the event in 2011 with an 8-under 208 (68-72-68). ASU tied with Long Beach for the team title in 2011. Back in 2008, Tristan Bierenbroodsot shot a 10-under 206 (66-67-71) to win the event.

Freshman Nicolo Galletti is at 3-under 141 (73-68) and tied for tenth, while junior Austin Quick is tied for 14th at 2-under 142 (71-71). Sophomore Alberto Sanchez is a 1-over 143 (73-70), while junior Broc Johnson is at 2-over 146 (75-71). Sanchez is at 13-under on the par-5 holes in his past 90 holes.

ASU will finish its fall schedule at the Hawaii Kauai Invitational Nov. 4-6 and then will open its spring schedule in Waikoloa, Hawaii, Feb. 4-6, at the Amer Ari Intercollegiate.

THE FIELD: The field includes CSU Bakersfield, Cal Poly, Cal State Fullerton, Gonzaga, Hawai’i, Long Beach State, Loyola Marymount, Pepperdine, Sacramento State, San Diego, Seattle, South Dakota State, Southern Utah, UC Irvine, UC Santa Barbara, Utah State, Utah Valley, Weber State and host Cal State Northridge. ABOUT THE TOURNAMENT: The 18-year old tournament recently changed its name to the "The Cullum Invitational" after the legendary Northridge men's golf coach. In previous years, the tournament has been called "The Countrywide Invitational" and in 2006 was renamed "The Bill Cullum/Countrywide Invitational". This years field features 20 teams who will battle the Wood Ranch course which is par 72 and 6,819 yards.

EAGLE UPDATE: Jon Rahm’s nine eagles last year was tied for the best mark in the nation with Xander Schauffele of San Diego State. That also was the most by a Sun Devil in the past 20 seasons, topping Paul Casey’s eight eagles in his freshman season of 1997-98. Jon had three of them in the Tucker Invitational in late September and posted one in the first round of the Alister MacKenzie Invitational, bringing his career total to 13. Since Golfstat began tracking in 1993-94, only four Sun Devils have more career eagles than Jon Rahm.

BACK IN GOLF WORLD POLL: The Sun Devils returned to the Golf World poll this fall (No. 21 in latest poll). It marked the first Golf World top-25 ranking since ASU was No. 23 on Oct. 4, 2010. ASU wants to get back to where it once was with regards to rankings. ASU has been in 65 of the 105 polls Golf World has published since it started rankings in 2001-02. It reached No. 2 on Oct. 19, 2009, was in the top-five seven times (last time was Nov. 30, 2009) and was in the top-10 33 times (last was on May 24, 2010).
