TEMPE, Ariz.- The Arizona State University volleyball team took care of business at home on Thursday, handling the Colorado Buffaloes in three sets (25-23, 28-26, 25-14) to improve to 17-10 (6-10 Pac-12) on the season.
Macey Gardner had 18 kills in the contest - over a third of the team’s total kills in the game - and Bianca Arellano had 40 assists in her first game back on the court since sustaining an ankle injury against Colorado four games ago.
The Sun Devils posted a solid .292 hitting percentage of the day compared to just a .154 tally put up by the Buffaloes while the team also took advantage of numerous CU attack errors, earning 21 points off Colorado in the category – including several during crunch time in the first and second sets.
Gardner paced the way in a back-and-forth first set, logging eight kills in the frame along with four of her 10 digs on the night to help set the way for her fifth double-double of the season.
After taking a 17-12 lead in the first, Colorado ripped off a 10-4 run to take a 22-21 lead but the Buffaloes had two unforced errors and ASU outscored CU 4-2 to end the set and take a 1-0 lead in the contest.
ASU fell behind 13-9 in the second set, but slowly picked their way back into the game, evening things out at 19 a piece to set up a dramatic conclusion that saw eight ties and three lead changes. The Sun Devils successfully fended off three match points and ripped off three straight points after trailing 25-26 to take a 2-0 lead into the break with a 28-26 victory.
Set three was all Sun Devils as ASU used a 14-4 run to pull out to an insurmountable 19-9 lead and cruised to a 25-14 victory to claim the set and the game.
ASU returns to the court on Sunday to take on the Utah Utes beginning at Noon MT at Wells Fargo Arena in Tempe, Ariz.
