LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Arizona State University senior running back and return specialist Marion Grice has been named a finalist for the Paul Hornung Award, presented by Texas Roadhouse and given annually to the most versatile player in major college football.

Grice, one of five finalists for the prestigious award, joins Western Kentucky’s Antonio Andrews, LSU’s Odell Beckham, Texas A&M’s Johnny Manziel and UCLA’s Myles Jack.

Grice has recorded 1,673 all-purpose yards this season, including 173 carries for 901 yards and 14 touchdowns, 43 receptions for 366 yards and six touchdowns, and 17 kick returns for 406 yards. He is averaging 167.3 all-purpose yards per game this season, eighth most in the nation, and has posted over 100 all-purpose yards in 12 straight games, which is the fourth longest active streak among all FBS players.

He has totaled 120 points on 20 touchdowns in 2013, and ranks second in the nation in scoring at 12 points per game and sixth nationally in rushing touchdowns with 14. He also leads the nation’s running backs in receiving touchdowns with six.

Grice became the third Sun Devil in school history and just the 15th Pac-10/12 player in the past 36 seasons (1978-present) to notch 20 touchdowns in a season. He is third on the school’s single-season touchdowns list and needs just two more to tie Wilford “Whizzer” White’s school record set in 1950. His 39 career touchdowns are also fifth all-time in ASU history, despite playing in just 23 games.

Grice has found the end zone 26 times in his past 13 games dating back to last season and he is averaging a touchdown roughly every 10.8 times he touches the ball in 2013.

Grice’s 901 rushing yards this season are just 99 yards shy of 1,000. The last Sun Devil back to hit the 1,000-yard mark was Cameron Marshall with 1,050 yards in 2011, and Grice would be only the third ASU back to hit the 1,000-yard mark since 2001 as Ryan Torain had 1,229 yards in 2006.

“I like this group of players as finalists for my award,” said Paul Hornung, the Louisville native who won the 1956 Heisman Trophy playing QB and who set the NFL single-season scoring record for the Green Bay Packers playing halfback and placekicker. “They show up in the big games, can find the end zone and do what it takes to win – which was how I played the game. It will be interesting to watch them in action the rest of the season.”

The winner and his family will be honored on Jan. 28 at the annual Paul Hornung award Banquet presented by KentuckyOne Health at the Galt House Hotel in downtown Louisville.
