TEMPE – The Arizona State University water polo program will welcome two talented newcomers to the squad next season, as head coach Todd Clapper announced the 2014-15 signing class on Tuesday.
Taylor Bertrand (La Jolla, Calif./La Jolla HS) and Sammy Snow (Upland, Calif./Upland HS) will the join Sun Devils next season as utility players, bringing a wealth of talent and the ability to play at any position in the pool.
“There is a lot to like about these two. First and foremost, they are people of great character and are very hard working,” Clapper said. “They are versatile players who can play at any position in the field and in the past year, they have really taken off as players.”
Taylor Bertrand scored 95 goals during her junior season at La Jolla, adding 28 assists, 20 steals and 12 ejections drawn. She was named a All-CIF Top-20 selection in San Diego County for the season and named the team’s Offensive Player of the Year in leading the team in scoring.
She helped her Viking squad to the CIF Finals and was named a San Diego Union-Tribune Scholar-Athlete for water polo and swimming and diving.
Bertrand has been a member of the La Jolla Water Polo Club since 2005 and has taken part in the junior Olympics in each year since that that.
Outside of the pool, Bertrand was an accomplished softball player in 2011 with an .800 OBP while leading the team in home runs and she has also been a race car driver in the Lucas Oil Off-Road Series since 2011.
Betrand has been a member of her high school Honor Roll since enrolling at La Jolla and maintains close to a 4.0 GPA. Additionally she has been a member of the National Charity League since 2008 and engages in other community service activities as part of the Vaachi “No Hate” Club and the Mariners Service Club.
Sammy Snow comes to the Sun Devils as a 2013 Junior Olympic All-American
She was named to the 2013 All-Area water polo team by the San Gabriel Valley Tribune, joining 2013-14 Sun Devils Stephanie Contreras and Mia Rycraw on the list.
Additionally, Snow landed on the CIF-SS Division IV first team last season in addition to the Hacienda First Team All-League Squad and the Inland Empire First-Team as well.
Snow competed for Foothill Club Water Polo and is also a member of several clubs and activity committees, including the National Charity League, Key Club, Operation Smile, Best Buddies, Yearbook and is a PTSA Membership Chairperson. She maintains over a 3.5 GPA academically.
“I am thrilled that Sammy and Taylor chose ASU and anxious to work with them next season,” Clapper said.
The Sun Devils will kick off the 2014 campaign beginning Friday, January 24 at the UC Santa Barbara Tournament. ASU is returns many student-athletes from the 2013 squad that finished fourth in the MPSF and in the final CWPA Coaches Poll. Among the returnees from last years 26-7 squad are All-Americans Ao Gao (defender) and E.B. Keeve (goalkeeper).
