Sun Devils Hold Off UCLA, Claim Pac-12 South Title
Arizona State 38, UCLA 33
Nov. 23, 2013, at Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif.
With an impressive first half and two big late defensive stands against No. 14 UCLA, Arizona State beat the Bruins, 38-33, and became Pac-12 South champions for the first time.
And they’ll get to play Stanford for another roll in the Pasadena grass on New Year’s Day.
UCLA kicker Ka'imi Fairbairn missed a field goal with 4:38 remaining and the Sun Devils were able to hold off one final UCLA drive to claim the divisional championship for the first time since the Pac-12 expanded into North and South divisions three years ago. UCLA was the two-time defending Pac-12 South Champion.
Linebacker Carl Bradford had an interception return for a touchdown to start the second quarter and Kelly found wide receiver Jaelen Strong with five seconds left in the first half to take what appeared to be a commanding 35-13 lead into the break.
However, UCLA battled back in the second half and brought its deficit to five with more than 10 minutes to play in the final quarter.
After another Sun Devil drive stalled, the Bruins used eight plays to bring up a third-and-six from the ASU seven-yard line before linebacker Chris Young made one of the biggest defensive plays in recent school history. Young sacked UCLA quarterback Brett Hundley for a loss of 13 yards to push the Bruins’ field goal back to the 20-yard line, and force Fairbairn’s 37-yard miss.
Kelly finished 20-for-27 for 225 yards and a touchdown while rushing for a career high 99 yards and a touchdown in the winning effort. Running back Marion Grice added 95 yards on the ground and a season-high 72 receiving yards as he finished the game with 268 all-purpose yards.
The Sun Devils finished with 448 total yards and the defense registered a season-high eight sacks.
Senior linebacker Chris Young notched a game-high 13 tackles as well as three sacks, including two in the fourth quarter, as the Devils swarming defense registered a season-high eight sacks.
The Sun Devils celebrated with Sun Devil Nation at the Rose Bowl after claiming their first Pac-12 South Championship.
